Garry Allen Palmateer

Garry Allen Palmateer, affectionately known as “Chairman” and “Uncle Funkle,” passed away peacefully at home in London, Ontario, on March 8, 2026, surrounded by love from his family. He was 80 years old.

He was born on February 9, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, to Harford Allen Palmateer and Beatrice Elizabeth Stevens.  Garry’s life was defined by deep curiosity, a love of music, and an unwavering devotion to his family. Garry completed Grade 13 at John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto. While there, he was an enthusiastic member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity. He went on to obtain his Master’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Guelph.

From a young age, Garry was endlessly curious about the world around him. As a child, he could often be found examining swamp water through a small microscope, a fascination that eventually led him to a successful career in microbiology.

He began his professional career with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment before founding his own company, GAP EnviroMicrobial Services Inc.  He ended his career as Vice President and Chief Microbiologist of Guanine Inc.  Through his work, Garry played a leading role in helping to identify the cause of the Walkerton E. coli outbreak and later was a key witness at the Walkerton Inquiry.  Garry contributed meaningfully to public health and environmental safety.

Spending time with family was one of Garry’s greatest passions in life. He greatly treasured summers spent at his grandparent’s family cottage at Little Shadow Lake, in Coboconk, and later at the Sage family cottage at Three Brothers Lake near Hall’s Lake. His favorite days were filled with fishing, laughter, and togetherness. These summers were marked by simple pleasures and lasting memories with friends and family.

Garry was a music lover. He began his musical journey with the violin and piano in grade school. In high school, his talent and enthusiasm led him to learn the clarinet and saxophone and he joined the school band called the Mello-Aires.  He also was proficient with the guitar, ukulele, harmonica, and recorder.  Music was more than a hobby; it was a creative outlet and a lifelong companion. Garry’s musical abilities even extended to composing his own music, a testament to both his skill and his joy in creating.

A passionate sports fan, Garry was particularly devoted to the London Knights. He made it a point to watch every game and follow the family ritual of lighting a good luck candle, wearing his London Knights jersey, and donning his London Knights cap. He was also a loyal supporter of the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Above all else, Garry was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his beloved wife, JoAnne Palmateer (nee Sage); his sons Dave Palmateer (Katharine), Ryan Palmateer (Rachel), and Andrew Palmateer (Samantha); his cherished grandson, William Palmateer; and his soon-to-be-born granddaughter (as yet unnamed) who he was eagerly anticipating meeting. He is also survived by his stepson, Paul Crawford (Julie); his sister, Barbara Drohan (Lynn); nephews Rob Drohan (Nicolle) and Mike Drohan (Kate); great-nieces Mayella and Lauryn; great-nephew Hayden; and his sister-in-law, Jacqui Sage.

As per Garry’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life in Garry’s honour will be held at a later date. His ashes will be placed in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Guelph, Ontario.
