Obituary of Stephen Wayne Hohner
Stephen Wayne Hohner, 69, of London, Ontario, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2025, in London Health Science Centre. A celebration of life for Steve will be held at a
future date – time and place to be announced.
Steve was born in Barrie, Ontario to Ken and Eleanor Hohner on April 8, 1956. From an early age, he was curious and adventurous, developing a keen interest in the world at
large and living in New Zealand, Australia and Canada, from Coast to Coast. He and Margaret raised three wonderful children in BC and loved living on the farm with his
many horses, dogs and cats. His drive and attention to detail flourished as he pursued an Engineering Technology Diploma at Okanagan College in Kelowna, BC, and friends
recall how he could turn even the simplest project into a learning experience for those around him.
After completing his master’s degree in philosophy at the University of Calgary, Steve embarked on a distinguished career in public service that took him across various
communities in British Columbia. As both Director of Public Works and CAO from 2002 to 2014, he was known among colleagues for his innovative solutions during
challenging times—especially his ability to find solutions when difficulties seemed insurmountable. During the Lillooet fires, Steve’s calm leadership and resourcefulness
not only earned him the Governor’s Medal of Honour but also left a lasting impact on the community’s recovery and resilience. He worked tirelessly, often late into the night, to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.
In 2014, Steve returned to his roots in Ontario, carrying with him the lessons and friendships from his years out west. He remained active in his pursuits, sharing his
experiences and talents with all those around him. It was in London, Ontario, that he found his soul mate Anne-Marie, rediscovering their connection from childhood. Steve
and Anne-Marie found joy together as they explored the world around them, each discovering new ways to express themselves through photography. In Ontario, he
reestablished himself professionally with Dillon Consulting. He continued to be passionate about his music and photography – as evidenced through his dedication to
Henry’s Cameras where he worked during his post-surgery rehabilitation. At his heart, Steve was always focused on his ever-expanding family both in BC and Ontario.
Steve’s passion for music and photography was a constant thread throughout his life.
He captured family moments and the beauty of BC and Ontario’s wilderness with a keen eye, gifting those he loved with images that reflected both technical skill and a genuine appreciation for the world’s quiet wonders. Whether listening to music among friends or adventuring outdoors (skiing, kayaking and scuba diving), Steve brought joy and curiosity to everything he did.
Above all, Steve was a amazingly strong fighter who never gave up and always supported his family. His perseverance through health challenges inspired everyone around him. Loved ones watched in awe as he faced adversity with unwavering courage, overcoming the odds time and again. Steve’s strength uplifted those closest to
him, and his legacy of resilience and love continues to inspire his family and many friends who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne-Marie Scott; his siblings: Ronald Hohner (Janet), Susan VanDenBerg (Garry), and Cindy Elschner (James); sisters-in-law: Mary-
Elizabeth Bordignon (Robert) and Rose-Marie Kittmer (Jamie); his children: Joel Hohner (Francesca), Stephanie Weightman (Edwin), Sarah Hohner, Mark Hensen (Carly), and Paul Scott (Christina); his grandchildren: Quinn Weightman, Aleah Sharpe, Rylee Lavery-Hensen, Blake Lavery-Hensen, and Nyah Scott; nieces and nephews: Ben
Hohner, Terry Hohner, Ian Hohner (Carolyn), Jessica Hohner, Nicole Perry (Sam), Meggan Kittmer, Emily Kittmer, Abigail Kittmer, and Ben Kittmer; great-nephew Max
Hohner; and his cherished cat, Nolah, who was always by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Eleanor Hohner, and his brother, Terry
Hohner (Elizabeth).
Memorial donations may be made to Verspeetan Family Cancer Centre, 747 Baseline Road East, London, Ontario N6C 2R6. The family wishes to extend their gratitude
to the amazing doctors and medical staff at the Verspeetan Family Cancer Centre, University Hospital Multi-Organ Transplant Unit and the wonderful homecare from
