My earliest memories of Mau are of a genuinely cool guy - someone who was endlessly creative, and made it seem effortless. A kind, calm soul. A perfect match for my aunt Lani. I still have the art book he gave me more than thirty years ago, a reminder of how he encouraged everyone around him to embrace their creativity. His woodworking pieces around our house are quiet reminders of his talent and craft. We will miss his annual Christmas puzzle, but I will forever cherish our last conversation, talking about our favourite F1 drivers and chatting about upcoming races. Each race and interesting piece of art (among so many other memories and moments) will forever be reminders of Mau.

Where to start our tribute to Mau? There are so many thoughts, but first it is our thankfulness that he was a much loved part of our family and a deep gratitude that he was in our lives for over thirty years.
Mau was a calm, patient and watchful presence who could light up a room with his smile and laughter.
He was a man of so many talents....
a carving and whittling master, an adventurous chef, a Mr. Fixit, a holder of immense knowledge on so many things, especially if it had working parts (or even better non working parts!)
He was a caring co-owner of Bob, Bourbon and Mr. Hapi, who all received lots of belly rubs.
He was the love of Lani's life, as she was the love of his.
We will miss our "I Believe I'll Have Another One" man. He will always live in our hearts.
Rest in peace, Mau. Much love.

I did not want to meet another starving artist. He hated redheads. We met and it was instant. Love at first sight as they say.
We were together for 35 years. We bought a house in Stratford and we traveled to Newfoundland in my Mini, rented a house in Victoria BC for 6 months and enjoyed each other for all that time. In 2005 Cancer arrived and he was terribly ill but never complained. He beat that and was cancer-free for 17 years. Then came more of that horrid disease. For the last year of his life he wasn't able to eat anything. Mau, who loved to cook and to eat different foods, was kept alive via G-tube. He rarely complained. We still laughed together.
He was the love of my life and his loss has rendered me helpless. Thank goodness for my family, his family and our friends, all helping me daily. Bless you all.

Mau came into my life as my friendship with Lani grew and we began to spend a lot of time together. I found him funny but quirky and not easily understood. A very experimental foodie, Mau loved to prepare elaborate foods and share them with friends. Unfortunately, Lani and I shared a very restricted diet and were unable to appreciate all his offerings. If he was offended by our "pickiness" he never let on. I gradually came to enjoy and even marvel at Mau's creativity and range of interests. He was most comfortable at home but came to my house and helped me with DIY renovations. He was a very skilled tradesman and set me on the right track, happy to teach me as he went along. I enjoyed his company immensely and we chatted happily on a wide range of topics he knew a lot about. Of course he taught me the value of sharpened knives too. In recent years, we discovered we also shared a love of Formula 1 racing. Over all the years I knew Mau, the one topic we never touched on was his health. While Lani would keep me up to date on his battles, Mau never shared his woes. The face he presented to friends was one of humour, curiosity, and creativity. He was a lovely man and I shall miss him immensely.

Tinkerer. Mau could make something completely different from whatever treasures he found lying around and always did. He was a collector of others discards because he could see something new that others couldn't see. He will be missed, he is missed.

Lani and Mau and the dog visited me in Comox a number of years ago on New Year’s Eve. We were of a certain vintage by then and I thought we would never make it to midnight. Instead we made it to past 2am. I remember all the laughs and stories and fun we had. Not bad for some old timers. And that evening Mau taught me how to properly sharpen my kitchen knives. It’s something I’m grateful for, and always think of him as I sharpen them. Thanks Mau

Every Christmas that we got together with Mau he would bring some terrible scotch and a very fun, yet challenging, game/ puzzle. Everyone would spend a lot of time trying to solve it and he, of course, had it figured out!
I only have great memories. From Christmas puzzles to his eclectic home made tool collection, Mau was always a fun and interesting conversation and he will be missed.

Will miss our visits discussing his latest woodworking projects. Will always remember him when cutting with one of his sharpened knives. His help over the last few years was greatly appreciated.

I have many wonderful memories of Mau, but the best - and I weep as I write this - was when my two grandsons, aged about 6 and 9, came to visit. Mau immediately showed them all kinds of fascinating stuff, had them out practicing with him on skateboards he'd made himself, and best of all, showed them how to make a whistle out of an acorn top. The older, who's now 13 and over six feet tall, still picks acorns from the ground and makes whistles. I have nearby an elegant spoon he carved for me. Thank you, Mau, for your creativity, your curiosity, your kindness, your perceptive mind, and most of all, your great love for Lani. Your beautiful soul is deeply, deeply missed. And also, thanks to Lani, who fought valiantly for Mau to receive the best care until the end.

Q: What will you never forget about Maurice?
A: Mau was a kind and gentle soul who was steady, patient, and full of quiet joy. He had a rare ability to make those around him feel truly seen and at ease. His curiosity and sense of wonder gave life a quiet magic, whether he was sharing a story that sparked imagination or showing off a whittling project at the cottage.
He had a generous heart and was always ready to lend a hand, often helping friends and family with quiet dedication and care. Those who knew him will remember his calm presence, his playful spirit, and the way he could turn an ordinary moment into something memorable like the time he trained a raccoon to eat bread from his hand (a story, I have joyfully remembered since childhood)
Mau’s life was marked by love, kindness, and the joy he brought to others. His memory will continue to warm the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.
I will miss him greatly, but I’m comforted by the wonderful memories I have of him. My sincerest condolences to Lani and all who knew and loved him.
From Jools (Goddaughter of Lani)

Our great uncle Mau was one of the most creative and kind people we knew. Growing up, we always loved seeing or hearing about the projects he was working on. He looked at everything in life as something with potential and beauty.
Uncle Mau was also a great listener, and was always interested in hearing about our lives and interests. We will miss him dearly and think of him when we see wood carvings, puzzles, and homemade gadgets. Love always.

My Uncle Mau saw the potential in everything and everyone. Anything was possible through creativity and persistence. My core memories growing up with him included having fun no matter what we were doing. Collecting bugs to rides on his motorcycle. A free spirit like his is rare and almost anything could make him laugh. I will miss your smile and unconditional love. Jen

Mau was my younger brother, 2 years younger. We grew up together along with our other siblings. He was a little rascal growing up, he loved pranks and was always in a good mood. He was a good, kind brother.
As he grew up, he had many friends and I cannot remember a time when he had a falling out with anyone.
He was very creative and artistic. He loved to putter to design some new creation he was proud to show off but also very modest when praised.
His cancer took much of his energy but he continued to create whenever he could.
His life was so much fuller than can be expressed here. He was a very gentle, special soul.
It is so hard to accept he is gone from us, the world is not the same without him. He will be missed.
