Celebration of Life
Obituary of Bradley Mathers
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Charles Bradley Mathers, affectionately known as Brad, a beloved son, father, brother, and uncle, who passed away far too soon on March 7th, 2026, at the age of 48.
Brad was the cherished son of Judy Dunnell (Mathers) and the late Bob Mathers. He was a devoted father to his son, Lane Mathers, who was truly the light of his life. Brad was a loving brother to Jeff Mathers (Gen) and a proud and caring uncle to Charlie Lester-Mathers, who brought him endless joy and laughter.
Known to some family members by the childhood nickname “Fred Evan Rude Johnston,” given to him by one of his uncles, Brad carried a playful spirit that stayed with him throughout his life. He will be remembered for his kind heart, easygoing nature, and the sense of humor he shared so freely with those around him. Brad was also known as a good neighbour—always friendly, quick with a smile, and willing to lend a helping hand whenever someone needed it.
Brad was a passionate sports fan who loved cheering on his favorite teams, rarely missing a chance to support the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. He was also a devoted football fan and proudly backed the Dallas Cowboys. In addition, Brad was an avid NASCAR enthusiast who believed the sun rose and set on his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. As many of his family and friends knew, Brad was also an enthusiastic 5‑pin bowler for many years and even competed in several tournaments.
Some of Brad’s most treasured moments were the simple ones. He loved playing video games, spending peaceful days fishing, and gathering with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing card games, especially euchre, which was one of his favorites.
Brad shared a special bond with his son Lane. The two loved watching the show Gold Rush together and were proud to wear their matching Gold Rush sweaters as father and son. These small but meaningful traditions were among the many ways Brad showed his love.
As a youngster, Brad enjoyed playing baseball, and later in life he took great pride in helping tend to the baseball diamond at Robert Mathers Memorial Park in Trowbridge, Ontario, a place named in memory of his father.
Though Brad’s time with us was far too short, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew him forever. In the words that held special meaning for his mother, “It is not the length of one’s life, but the depth of one’s life.”
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses who cared for Brad during the final months of his illness, including those at Listowel Memorial Hospital, Victoria Hospital in London, and Stratford General Hospital. A special thank you is extended to the nurses, particularly at Listowel Memorial Hospital, whose compassion and support meant so much to Brad and to the entire family during a very difficult time.
The family would also like to sincerely thank Pam Burns, Lane’s mother, for her kindness, support, and care for Brad, Lane, and the family throughout Brad’s final days.
Brad will be deeply missed by his mother Judy, his son Lane, his brother Jeff, his nephew Charlie, his extended family, and many dear friends.
Brad’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held on May 15th, 2026, at 11:30 am at the family burial site for immediate family and invited guests, (Elma Centre Cemetery) followed by a Celebration of Life at Parkview Gardens, 535 Elizabeth Street, Listowel, Ontario, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., where family and friends will gather to share stories, memories, and honour the life he lived. In keeping with Brad’s spirit, guests are encouraged to wear their favourite jersey in his honour. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Brad may be made in trust for Lane Mathers; please contact the family for details.
