Obituary of Sooi Kwai Wong

Please share a memory of Sooi to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with sadness we announce that Sooi Kwai Wong (SK) went to be with her Lord Jesus. She passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Ward, LHSC Victoria Campus, at 2:40 am, December 22, 2019, just short of her 80th birthday. SK is survived by a sister, a brother and many nieces and nephews living in Malaysia, as well as her “Hub” family and friends in London, Ontario. SK was a strong and independent woman who loved to serve others. Born in Malaysia, SK attended a Methodist high school and then went to Australia for her nurse’s training. After graduating, she worked in Malaysia and then trained as a Mid-Wife in England. Immigrating to Canada, SK worked as a nurse in small indigenous communities in Saskatchewan and Northern Ontario. SK took additional training in order to qualify for more senior and administrative roles while working for the federal government. SK managed a 98 bed hospital and became a Regional Operations Manager for Health Canada. In 1985, as a response to growing conviction, she chose to change the course of her career and pursue training in Chaplaincy and Counselling through King’s University College in London, Ontario, completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1993. In her retirement, SK remained active in helping and caring for others in many ways. This included care for neighbours and also her friend and housemate of 30 years, Barb Hulsman, who predeceased SK in August 2015. She was an active member of Hillside Church and supported the work of a number of mission agencies. SK’s smile, caring heart and spunky attitude will be missed. Cremation has taken place. A small memorial will be held at Hillside Church in the new year. Date and time to be confirmed. Donations can be made to Asia Link or Hillside Church.
