Irla, my sister-in-law, met my brother Donald age 20 when he as a member of the Nairn St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was appointed to visit neighbouring Vaneck United Church where she age 21 was a member. Their first date soon afterward almost didn’t happen because my father needed the car the same night. My father wouldn’t give in and my brother was devastated. Fortunately, my mother intervened on her son’s behalf, and Don and Irla lived happily ever after.
My parents were so proud and happy to have Irla for their beloved daughter-in-law. In my father’s eyes, Irla could do no wrong. Both were so proud of her musical talents. I envied her ability to play the piano by ear. Mother in her letters to me in Toronto in the 1950s recounted Irla’s latest musical accomplishments, then with the Earle Terry Singers in London, Ont.
My mother first took notice of Irla’s ability to organize when she and Don were married in Vaneck United Church, 15 August 1953. It was a picture-perfect country wedding on a beautiful summer day where everything went off exactly as Irla had planned. My most vivid memory is the newly-married couple driving to the reception in Ilderton in a decorated Model-A Ford. During the following nine years three daughters were born. These three little girls, Carole 8, Louise 7, and Brenda 3, all beautifully dressed, excitedly came to my wedding where their mother was one of my three attendants.
Personally, I’m forever grateful to Irla for organizing the Stewart Roots Tour to Scotland in 1993. In July of 1991 I had finally finished writing the 650-page tome, From Heather to Hill, a family history and genealogy of our Scottish progenitor and Ontario pioneer, John Stewart, aka Jack of the Hill. Relatives talked about a tour to Scotland to see the sites mentioned in my book, but after bringing it to fruition, I was feeling a bit spent. Irla and Donald stepped up to the plate and arranged our tour primarily to see Stronuich, in Glen Lyon, Jack of the Hill’s birthplace. Don and Irla had previously toured Scotland, seen Stronuich, and knew the famous sites in the area to visit and also the best hotels. At the end of the day, we sang Scottish songs led by Irla. They hired a bus for 80, the number on the trip. It was a smooth and enjoyable experience allowing me to sit back and truly relax.
Irla was born three days before I was. We used to joke that because she was older I had to do what she said. I wish that she was still here.
Margaret Bennet-Alder, born Stewart

Carole, I am so very sad to hear of the passing of your mom. Mrs. Stewart was such a force in developing me as a young musician and I love her for that. I first encountered Mrs. Stewart as my music teacher at Holmesville Public School right around the time of her retirement from teaching. I then had the opportunity to sing for her in the Teen Tones; this is where my love of choral music began. She brought such joy to making music with this group of girls and gave us so many opportunities. She continued to be interested in all of my music endeavours over the years. I loved running into her at the many events she loved to attend. I am truly blessed to have had such a special woman as a mentor and friend.

On behalf of all the Bodaly girls, we are so very saddened by the passing of Irla. It was wonderful to see her last month when she joined us in Goderich to pay her respects to our Mother. Our Mother and Irla were such great friends, as were Don and our Father for many many years. So many fond memories of music, singing, get togethers. Irla will be remembered dearly by all of us. Gail, Susan, Donna & Anne Bodaly...and Families.

Irla was part of the Bodaly family for well over 50 years. My mom, Betty Bodaly, was lucky enough to have Irla as her Choir director, not only at West Humber United Church for several years, but then after mom & dad retired to Goderich, mom & Irla continued their special friendship, continuing to sing at North United Church. I too was lucky to have Irla as my Choir director for the Humberettes. She was gifted in so many ways, but I always found her giving, caring and loving attitude towards people to be most profound. Summer of 2019 she came to Barrie to visit with my mom, taking a lovely boat ride in Orillia, the two of them chatting for hours to catch up on all the recent Goderich news. That was, as mom said, one of the most special times for her, as it was, sadly, the last they saw one another. Irla, thank you for the wonderful memories you have given the Bodaly clan, you are now up in Heaven with mom singing “I Don’t Wanna Play In Your Yard”. God Bless.

I was saddened to read of Irla's death. I knew her from her work with my Dad and his high school in Etobicoke, training the chorus for a musical - I think she did this 2 or 3 years in a row. All this was more than 50 years ago! I remember it very well because I had the privilege of working with her then. Over the years I saw her a number of times - always supporting music, always a person who thought first of all about supporting others. The last time I saw her was, I believe, nearly two years ago when I played a fundraising concert at Dundas United in London, ON - and she came and spoke with me afterwards. She was the same as always - full of joy of the moment, so engaged and intelligent - and so very, very warm. It's a difficult time for our species, for our planet. All the more important to remember and celebrate Irla, who is a joyful reminder that a human life can be a triumph of love and committed engagement.
My thoughts are very much with her and with all of her family in these days.

I have lost a special friend
And though it is sad to part,
I shall always have memories of Irla
Stored safely away in my heart.
It is said that blessings linger
Where caring hearts have been
I treasure I have had Irla in my life,
Showing me how much that can mean.

To the family of Irla Stewart - on behalf of the Don Wright Faculty of Music and the New Horizons Band, I send our deepest sympathies. Your mother was presence who impacted each person with whom she engaged. Her leadership with Marlene Fagan resulted in a named studio after Earle Terry–to watch her energy, passion, and dedication was a life lesson. She will be missed and I am thankful to have known her. Betty Anne (Younker), Dean, Don Wright Faculty of Music.
