Sending you all my deepest sympathies and prayers.
Bill a.k.a. Mr. Horley was a great influence and mentor to me and I think of him often when I am coaching my young players.
I remember being in his Math class his first year at Lucas and noticing the basketball posters. He and I began to connect through basketball even before he started to coach at Lucas. He would offer me tickets to go see the Western men play. I loved to go watch the Stangs and eventually went on to join the Mustang Basketball family. He then took over our program and our winning ways continued! I remember the dreaded bench jumps and hall training sessions prior to our practices in the gym. I remember Mr. Horley leaving his glasses on his clipboard at centre court time and again...only to be stepped on or broken from a stray bounce/pass and us trying not to laugh when he would find his mangled glasses, I remember him telling us to get on the sideline for another dreaded " 7" (Sprint) drill..telling us if everyone pushed it would be our last...only to do one more...he would yell the dreaded phrase "Don't be last!!" And it would motivate us to go that much harder...we built an amazing tradition together!
Thank you for your dedication and willingness to share your expertise. We are all the better for it!
Sincerely,
Heather

To our dear friend Vicki,
It was so sad to hear of Bill's passing. We both have such wonderful memories of Bill...(watching him coach our daughter at Lucas in the 80s, sharing stories in my hairdressing chair as I cut his hair, listening to his wise words, and enjoying visits together).
Joe and I send our deepest condolences to you and Garth. You are in our thoughts at this difficult time.
Vicki, please let me know if you need anything, I am always available to help out or just to listen and talk. Bill was truly one of a kind and will be missed by so many.
Thinking of you.

I played junior girls basketball at Lucas while Coach Horley coached the senior girls. I never got to play on his team, but sometimes when I stuck around late after school, he'd let me practice with the seniors. For a b-ball girl in grade 10, trying to be the best, having that chance simply was the best. Now I'm a mom with 2 boys of my own. We spend countless hours at the playground hoops. I often catch myself hollering out the phrases I used to hang on from Coach Horley: "my grandmother can run faster than that!" "Practice doesn't make perfect! Perfect practice, makes perfect!" Coach Horley was an inspiration. Sadly missed, but his coaching words carry on.

Viki,and family.
I can't believe Coach is gone. Although I haven't seen him in a while I will never forget what he gave to me as a coach and a man. I probably spent more time with him during my high school years then my own dad. He taught me many things through basketball. I speak about him all the time to my players today and passed. As I am writing this it is Sunday morning at 9 and I am sitting in a gym running an OBA tournament. This because Coach took the time to coach me. As look out on to the court today I can still see him in his short shorts and converse chuck Taylor's, shooting the ball. He had a great shot. Some years later I remember sitting in the stands at my old high school (the road) watching a game. I new his son Garth played at that school but never met him. It was easy to pick out though as his shooting form was the same as his dad's. In ending I would simply like to say well done Coach. Your the Best.

Coach Horley had a profound impact on my life. He made me a better player and a better man. When I have faced tough times I have always remembered him telling me " if you are 2 for 32 you don't give up you keep shooting". I have never stopped shooting.
Thank you Coach.

Thank you Mr. Horley for being available and kind when my child and I had a philosophical difference of opinion. It could have been life altering for her, had he not given her /me guidance.

It was an honour and a privilege to be a member of Bill's care team at the nursing home. He was always really appreciative of anything and everything we did for him, always courteous and patient, always a gentleman despite the constant frustration and pain caused by his physical limitations, a battle that finally overcame him.
Bill was someone you actually looked forward to assisting as you could always expect an interesting conversation about any number of subjects, though unfortunately for Bill it was never about sports with me, just not an interest of mine. We talked philosophy, science, music and art - the latter demonstrating his pride in Vicki and her chosen field despite him being a self appointed "jock".
My sincerest condolences on Bill's passing. He will be missed by many on the wing of Meadow Park Nursing Home and most especially by me.

Hello Vicki and Garth, Garry And I are saddened by the recent passing of Bill and wish you only the best in the future. Yesterday we were in Athens and today we are in Istanbul so I guess you can understand how we just could not be there for you both in this time of grieving. Both Garry and I know exactly what you are going through and hope you manage affairs in just a way which will please everyone. We will try to make it to Bill's Memorial and make him proud. Your write up of his life was very good and I know he would be proud of both of you. All the Best! Alice and Garry.

Dear Vicki, My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time. Mr. Horley will always be remembered as a true teacher. On and off the basketball court he taught me about winning and losing--his lessons and wisdom I still quote today! May you find comfort in the days ahead knowing how many student-athlete lives he touched.
