I think that I was 16 when I met Joan. Courtesy of friendship with her daughters Melissa and Adria. On first meeting, you knew that you were dealing with a strong, intelligent force of nature. Her stubbornness was a badge of honour. But she had a well formed sense of humour and could giggle like a child when amused. She liked to laugh. She appreciated irony. She was just an extraordinary woman and I was glad to know her.

We met Joan walking around our neighbourhood in 2017 the year we moved into our lovely Old North Condos community. She was very friendly, high-spirited and always provided us with interesting bits of information about her medical status, the importance of daily walking, having a healthy diet, the love for her children & grandchildren, her love of reading, knitting hats while watching her TV, and much more. As a matter of fact, we are the benefactors of a couple of her hand knitted hats – bless you Joan for keeping us warm this cold winter and many more to come. Joan was extremely proud of living independently in her beautiful unit which she adored. Doing her own house cleaning was not a chore for her but exercise - bravo Joan! We admired her enthusiasm and positivity for all life had to offer her, including embracing new technology in order to be in touch with her family in different parts of the world. We will miss seeing Joan on her daily walks, chatting with her, and we will always remember her fondly. Today we celebrate a life lived with gumption; a life well lived!

I first met Joan in 1986 when I started work as a research secretary in Reproductive Biology at Western. Joan will be missed for her feisty views on life, death, the universe and our world. She truly disliked being called Phyllis, yet loved that her father created a new gladiolus named Phyllis after her. I will be forever grateful to Joan for two things in particular. Returning to Ontario from British Columbia after starting my own business and ultimately drowning in debt and jobless, Joan simply invited me to share her accommodation, which I did for over six years. We travelled Canada from east to west, ventured to Scotland and Mexico, then I settled back into the workaday world. The second and most significant gift was her badgering me into a tai chi open house in early September 2001. We both joined, but Joan stopped after a few months. As for me, all these years later I still do at least one set every day, and remain practising to this day with my first instructor, James. Joan loved a good argument, was opinionated in the extreme, but had a good and generous heart. She loved to travel to visit two of my sisters, and was a very special friend to my late sisters Lorraine and Bette. I will miss her and our daily conversations. I send sincere condolences to her daughters and grandchildren, all of whom she was so proud. Look out, Heaven, for Joan has arrived.

My condolences to all Joan’s family.
I can imagine that her bright spirit and creative intelligence runs deeply in all her children and grandchildren. Although I did not know Joan well, we always shared a cheerful conversation when we met over coffee at Sunnivue Farm and her sparkle and wit stay with me.

I met Joan walking around our neighbourhood and we became friends bonding over vaccination appointments and sharing the same birthday. I will miss chatting at her back door , collecting walnuts for the local squirrels and discussing the growth of her poinsettias plant saved from last winter.
I admired her honesty , her knowledge of varied topics and her love of the simplest things in life.
She was an avid and very talented knitter , something that I admired and we exchanged opinions about the multiple books, movies , documentaries or “trash” we watched on the iPad.
I always enjoyed her excitement over the next flavour of ice cream that she had and her no-nonsense views about world events .
Over the last months I had the pleasure of meeting her daughters Adria and Melissa . She was so proud of them and her grandchildren as well. She was lucky to be able to chat with them everyday as she remained very able to handle technology with her multiple iPads and phones.
Joan knew exactly who she was and what she wanted without compromise , something that I found quite refreshing and admirable.
I am grateful to have met her and our friendship will remain dear to me.

I am very sorry for your loss.
I still remember very fondly Joans Saturday visits to the Sunnivue Farm store with her friend Barbara and the conversations which ranged from passionate to dramatic to insightful. She talked about her daughters a lot and was very proud of them.
Those were good afternoons on the store porch, they always stay in my heart.
